Can you maintain a relationship while traveling?

I thought this blog may help shed a bit of light for those thinking of traveling alone if you have a partner.

I went alone because I booked my flight a couple of weeks before I got into a relationship. So I’m drawing from some experiences here.

First Things First

Kinda obvious, but you have to find out your reason to travel. For me, it’s to have a culture shock, see some cool sights and enjoy pure freedom! Because of this, I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything at all.

If you want to go and get laid and cop off with the locals, maybe going traveling while in a relationship isn’t the best thing for you. A younger me might have wanted this, but I’m far too old now :).

Can It Work?

Yes, it’s going fine so far. I think the key is trust, I mean that’s the key in any relationship but, when you’re traveling, it’s far more important. Also, communication has a lot to do with it. It’s so much easier now with WiFi all over the place to chat to your partner for free (saving money is a must while traveling)!

Relating to trust and stating the obvious… Yes, there are opportunities to sleep with other people. The hostels are full of youngsters (mainly 18-25 year olds) and lots of beer, dirt-cheap beer at that. But with that said, there are things I’ve found. There tend to be 2 types of hostels: chilled hostels and party hostels. You can book into whichever one you want. So choose wisely.

The Choice Is Yours

If you don’t think you can last in a relationship then your relationship probably wasn’t very strong in the first place.

So it all comes down to how much you value your relationship and your morals, for me, it’s been easy to stay on the path.

Oh, and if you’re unsure of traveling, just do it! It’s so much fun!

Gods speed and good luck!
